Purpose:

The Access Management Conference Student Poster Competition was established to expose young professionals to the practice of access management as an important tool in transportation planning, operations and design. In addition, the competition will allow students to develop their research and presentation skills.

Eligibility:

Any student currently pursuing a graduate degree in urban planning, engineering, public administration, architecture, geography or a related field is eligible to participate.

Award:

Judges will select the top three posters determined by the scoring system. The winner will be announced at the closing session of the 2010 Access Management Conference. The top three entries will receive an award certificate(s). First place $250, 2nd place $100, and 3rd place $50.

Procedure:

Deadline for electronic submittal of a two-page summary of the poster presentation is May 7, 2010 to (Thomas.hiles@hdrinc.com). Because the competition is a poster presentation, a journal-quality paper is not required. However, high quality papers submitted will be considered by the Committee for publication in the online conference proceedings. The committee will review submissions and respond by June 30, 2010. All selected participants will be invited to attend the 2010 Mid-Year Meeting of the TRB Access Management Committee. Registration for the conference is online at www.accessmanagement.info.

Presentation:

A 30”x40” (horizontal x vertical) poster area will be given to each student to display the poster material. (Large, plotted sheets are preferred over small pages.). The panel of judges will view each poster and each participant will give a maximum 5-minute oral summary of their work and respond to maximum of 3 questions from the panel. Presentations will be Tuesday afternoon at a time to be announced.

Scoring System:

  • 50 points for the informational content of the poster
  • 20 points importance to the advancement of access management
  • 20 points for oral presentation to judges
  • 10 points for poster layout, graphics, and appearance
